A birders paradise

In earlier times the sea had free rein here and Lauwersmeer was open to the Wadden Sea. In 1969 fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam. A shock for many nature lovers! Fortunately it soon became evident that a beautiful new landscape had been created. Nature in the area around Lauwersmeer is so special that the area has now been designated as a National Park. There is much to discover in the peaceful and spacious wide-open landscape. Unusual flowers, enormous numbers of birds and fantastic views.
